City's September Sales Tax Check Down Modestly
September’s sales tax check for the City of Sand Springs continued a slightly downward trend when compared to the previous year. The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals has affirmed a Tulsa District Court ruling that upheld the City of Sand Springs’ denial of a Specific Use Permit (SUP) to establish and operate a limestone quarry in south Sand Springs. Sand Springs Materials LLC had appealed Tulsa District Judge Mary Fitzgerald’s December 2008 decision supporting the findings of fact and conclusions of law submitted by the City. It has been more than a decade since significant flooding occurred in the City of Sand Springs. Tulsa District Judge Jefferson Sellers issued a temporary injunction Thursday evening barring repeal of a May 10th resolution regarding apartments proposed to be built by Zimmerman Properties. City's Recycling Efforts Not Dropping Off
Sand Springs’ recycling drop-off center continued picking up business during the 2010 fiscal year. According to records tracked by the Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The MET), 623,692 pounds – around 312 tons – of recyclables were collected at the Sand Springs Recycling Depot between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010. Sand Springs Mayor Bob Walker threw out the first pitch as part of the Tulsa City-County Library System's Summer Reading Program celebration at ONEOK Field. Workers apply asphalt patches to Main Street near First Street to finish up an emergency sewer line repair that has kept a block-long section of the busy downtown street closed since last Sunday. Big Hole Blocking Main Street
Main Street was closed to traffic Sunday Afternoon when a sink hole left a void in the pavement between First and Second streets. Paving Project Set for Highway 97 South
Workers for Becco Construction are expected to begin a $2.4 million project on Monday, Aug. 2, to resurface Highway 97 from the Arkansas River bridge south to Sapulpa. Sandites traveling to and from downtown Tulsa on the Sand Springs Expressway will have a new set of routing challenges when they reach I-244 – the Inner Dispersal Loop (IDL). Work Begins to Replace City Hall Entrances
Visitors to Sand Springs’ Municipal Building will notice some significant changes around the building’s front and rear entrances in the coming weeks. May’s sales tax disbursement for Sand Springs showed an increase from the same month a year ago when collections figures posted one of the worst performances in memory – a decline of 15 percent. A one-time refund of sales taxes previously paid in error by a local manufacturer caused January’s City of Sand Springs sales tax disbursement to plummet 35.2 percent from the previous year’s amount. An army of utility workers moved wires and even lifted up traffic signals to get two oversized loads being transported by Contractors Cargo Co. through Sand Springs Tuesday morning. Warming Helps to Melt Snow; More Expected
Bright sunshine and temperatures around 40 degrees Monday afternoon loosened up some of the snow-packed and slippery areas on Sand Springs’ residential streets. Meanwhile, City Street Division crews continued to break up slush on collector streets and major roadways to get to bare pavement. Masons Deliver for Homebound Senior Meal Program
The Sand Springs Masonic Lodge No. 475 delivered on its efforts this week to keep hot meals coming to local homebound senior citizens. Sand Springs senior citizens will be riding in style with the arrival Friday, Dec. 18, of a Ford 14-passenger bus furnished by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and Sand Springs Park Friends. Old North Road Paving Scheduled to Begin Wednesday
According to Tulsa County highway maintenance, paving is expected to begin on Old North Road tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 30). Work will begin on the Adams Road end of the project and proceed eastward to 81st West Avenue. Crews will then work on 81st West Avenue from Old North Road south to 10th Street. Sand Springs Police are investigating a report that police officers employed by the Department may be using anabolic steroids. The investigation was initiated by Police Chief Daniel Bradley after an officer reported he heard rumors of other officers illegally using steroids.
